Talking AI: A Guided Conversation on AI Critique and Refusal in Academic Librarianship

October 21 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Are you a current or future librarian against AI? Do you want to learn how to advocate for AI refusal in professional environments and job interviews when faced with opposition? Are you curious about finding and creating resources and communities that oppose big tech’s influence on the information environment? Let’s talk about it!

Join SCARLA, the Student College, Academic and Research Libraries Association for our next event, Talking AI: A Guided Conversation on AI Critique and Refusal in Academic Librarianship on Wed, Oct 21 6:30-7:30 PM EST via Zoom.

The conversation will be led by academic librarians Julie Setele (creator of the zine AI is Very Bad Actually: A Manifesto) and Violet B. Fox (creator of the zine A Librarian Against AI; or, I Think AI Should Leave). We will discuss topics including:

  • Navigating conversations about AI refusal with pro-AI supervisors and coworkers in academic libraries
  • Talking critically about AI in academic library job applications and interviews
  • The relationship between AI refusal, academic freedom, and late-stage capitalism
  • The power of finding, creating, and celebrating alternative resources and communities in the library world for opposing AI and the broader tech oligarchy

While this event will have a particular focus on academic librarianship, much of what we discuss will be applicable across library contexts and beyond. Everyone is welcome!
