SUMMARY:Celebrating Intellectual Freedom: Banned Books Week
DESCRIPTION:Join SCARLA and LISSA on Monday October 6\, 2025 in a free-flowing discussion & open mic night celebrating the right to intellectual freedom and highlighting the leaders in our communities championing the fight against censorship. Come read an excerpt from your favorite banned book or sit with us in solidarity. \nRegister here. We also have a padlet\, Celebrating Intellectual Freedom\, for more info and community submissions! \nCensorship is no longer creeping into the fabric of our country; it is steamrolling forward. And many of the loudest pro-censorship voices have positions of power within our communities. The data released during National Library Week 2025 shows that “the majority of book censorship attempts are now originating from organized movements. Pressure groups and government entities that include elected officials\, board members\, and administrators initiated 72% of demands to censor books in school and public libraries.” \nInstead of giving in to these attacks\, ALA annually celebrates Banned Book Week\, which takes place this year from October 5 – 11. The theme this year is “Censorship Is So 1984. Read for Your Rights.” Here are some ways you can get involved. \nSCARLA and LISSA hope you will join us in standing up for our rights. \nDate: October 6\, 2025\nTime: 6 PM – 7:30 PM EST\nLocation: Zoom – To attend\, please register for the event. \nWays you can participate: \n\nJoin the conversation by submitting to the event padlet\nRead an excerpt from a banned book – all kinds of text and languages are welcome!\nShowcase your library’s banned book display\nShare your professional experiences with book challenges\nTell us how reading a banned book affected your life\nAnd more!\n\nWant to participate? \n\nTo participate during the live event\, please fill out this form. We are accepting a small number of pre-recorded submissions to play during.\nSubmit your own additions to the padlet.\n\nWe can’t wait to see you there! \nFor any questions\, please reach out to rutgers.scarla@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Guest Speaker: Jay Singley - #CritLib & Writing for Publication as a Graduate Student
DESCRIPTION:Join SCARLA in welcoming Jay Singley\, author of the recent ACRLog guest blog post “We Couldn’t Generate an Answer for your Question”. The post is a critical examination of using Ex Libris’ “Summon Research Assistant”\, an AI-powered research assistance tool meant to aid users in summarizing and locating citations. Jay audited the Summon tool after seeing reports of error messages and results suppression for certain topics. These error messages were first reported while searching for keywords such as “Tulsa race riot” and “Tulsa race massacre.” There are clear and urgent ethical considerations regarding the adoption of AI-tools into our academic work as both librarians and students. \nThe first part of our event will be a short presentation by Jay Singley and a discussion related to the ethical concerns of using AI-powered research assistants\, information suppression\, and opaque systems. We will talk about their process and audit of the Summon tool and the larger implications for our field. \nThe second portion of our event will be a conversation about professional writing as a graduate student and a librarian. We will have a free-flowing conversation and Q&A. \nJay Singley is the Document Delivery and Circulation Desk Manager at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics and a current LIS graduate student at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The ACRLog is a blog by and for academic librarians\, and is associated with the Association of College & Research Libraries\, a division of the American Library Association. The Ex Libris site has more information on the Summon Research Assistant. \nPlease read Jay’s guest blog post “We Couldn’t Generate an Answer for your Question” and come with your thoughts and questions. \nWhat is CritLib?\nCritical Librarianship explores and discusses librarianship and information work through a critical and activist practice. \nDate: October 27\, 2025\nTime: 6 PM – 7 PM EST\nLocation: Zoom – To attend\, please register for the event. \nWe can’t wait to see you there! \nFor any questions\, please reach out to rutgers.scarla@gmail.com
